Things To Consider –

When you are planning to make dice using resin, consider the following things before purchasing a resin.

1. Processing And Curing Time:

Processing time is also called pot-life or available time, which defines how long the resin takes to process after the resin and hardener have been blended.

After some time, the resin becomes thick and lumpy and, therefore, should not be further processed. On the other hand, curing time refers to how long the resin will take to get cured.

You must check the processing and curing time of the resin before you make the purchase, as you will know how to use the resin.

2. Durability:

It is necessary to buy a resin that is durable for use. It should be extremely resistant to corrosion and bubbles. When you mix the components, you should get a thick layer that is easy to use.

The resin should also be water-proof and heat resistant so that they should not get spoiled if the dice fall into the water by mistake.

3. Safety:

Resin and the hardener should not contain elements that are harmful or hazardous. It should be nontoxic and nonradioactive.

However, even if it is safe for use, avoid skin contact as it can lead to irritation and allergies on the skin. It is best to use the resin in a well-ventilated room and wear a mask, gloves, and goggles for protection.

Now, let’s move on to the reviews.

4. Better Boat Crystal Clear Epoxy Resin Kit For Dice –

This is probably the cheapest resin gallon on the market, but its quality is fantastic. It cures crystal clear, has plenty of working time, is very forgiving, self-degassing, and durable. I have used this to make dice, and it worked really well.

You get 30-45 minutes to show your creativity, after which it begins to cure. This resin is very thick, especially the A part, making it hard to work with. You may not be able to mix it properly and have many bubbles, especially if you are a beginner.

So, before starting the project, read and follow the directions included. The quickest hack is to warm the bottles(10 minutes), making them relatively thinner and reducing the bubbles. Then, it’ll be easier to mix, and you can add mica, glitter, and stuff to add colors/tint.

Mix both the parts in 1:1, and do it slowly to avoid bubbles. You’ll notice some bubbles when pouring, but given some time, most of them will surface and pop like they are on a self-destruction mission. But don’t take any chance and use a heat gun or torch.

It’ll cure crystal clear and glossy in 24 hours, but you can unmold it at ease in 6-8 hours. It’s like pouring at night, and it’s ready to take out by morning. Good if you want to make quite a lot every day.

Pros

  • It cures crystal clear, but you can add mica, glitter, etc
  • It’s very forgiving and self-degassing
  • You got 30-45 minutes of work time
  • It cures in 24 hours, but you can demold in 6-8 hours
  • You can make quite a lot of dice overnight

Cons

  • Way thicker than most others

3. Naked Fusion Epoxy Resin Art Resin For Dice –

This resin is among the best for art, and it works wonders for dice as well. It has zero VOCs, is fully non-toxic, is self-degassing and self-leveling, and has added UV inhabitants to prevent sun yellowing. I have used it quite a lot, and it cures clear and rock-hard every time.

You can also add mica, glitter, and alcohol inks to create amazing vibrant effects. Before we move along, I want to remind you that you must read the instructions, or your output will be just the opposite of what you want.

It’s on the thicker side, so it’s easier to pour but not to mix. To mix it is like giving yourself a good workout! OK, jokes apart, you have to warm it before use. This extra step makes it easier to mix, but most importantly, it reduces the bubbles.

Mix both bottles in a 1:1 ratio; mix by volume, not by weight. It gives you 45 minutes of work time, which is enough to get creative and get a bubble-free solution. When pouring, some bubbles will appear, but they’ve gone with a heat gun or torch.

It has added UV inhibitors that prevent yellowing from the sun; just don’t keep it in direct sunlight for long. The best thing is that you can de-mold in just 12 hours but have to wait 72 hours to cure fully. If you want a bigger option, check the Gallon option.

Pros

  • It has zero VOCs and is fully non-toxic.
  • It’s self-degassing and self-leveling
  • Cures crystal clear but can add mica, alcohol inks, glitter, etc.
  • You get 45 minutes of work time and can de-mold in 24 hours.
  • The UV inhibitors prevent yellowing from the sun.

Cons

  • It takes 72 hours to fully cure

2. TeExpert Epoxy Resin and Hardener Kit for Dice –

What happens when you see a cheap resin? You tend to skip, thinking it’s “junk,” but not this one. It’s cheap, actually very cheap, but it still blows a knockout every time on those “expensive” brands. Even at this price, you get 32 oz. resin and some bonuses.

It comes with measuring cups, gloves, instructions, and stirring sticks, so everything needed is already included. Sadly, you have to settle with 32 oz. as they don’t offer anything bigger. I like the consistency; it mixes well and fills nicely in the tiny crevices.

I made a few DND dice with mica pigments, and it turned out amazing – a few bubbles, no excess heat, no odor, nothing. But I suggest you strictly follow the instructions. Take both the bottles, pour in a 1:1 ratio, and mix very slowly for 3-4 minutes until the solution is crystal clear.

Once ready, it’s recommended to pour asap, but I say take your time; there is no need to hurry. You got around 1 hour of working time, and it has no odor, so go slow. It gets very few bubbles(if appropriately mixed), but whatever remains can be easily tackled down with a heat gun.

It cures clear and hard within 24 hours, but wait for another day if you want to do some sanding. It has UV inhabitants that prevent yellowing for at least six months after curing, perfect for the price.

Best part? It comes with a 100% money-back guarantee. The only problem is that it’s not as glossy(and clear) as the best ones, but that’s my personal opinion. It’s perfect unless you want it to be super glossy and ultra-clear.

Pros

  • It’s very affordable and also comes with bonuses.
  • The consistency makes it easy to mix, pour, and use.
  • It cures very clearly but also mixes well with mica powder.
  • You have plenty of working time, and it cures well in 24 hours.
  • Very few bubbles are easy to dissipate with a heat gun.
  • It comes with a 100% money-back guarantee.

Cons

  • Not as glossy(and clear) as the best one

1. Art ‘N Glow Clear Casting and Coating Dice Epoxy Resin –

When it comes to dice, this is the only resin I use. It’s very forgiving, easy to use, has minimal to no smell, gets very few bubbles, and cures hard in 24 hours. I used this to make a couple of DND dice with some glitter and dyes, and it cured just as I wanted – crystal clear and hard.

The viscosity is thick here, so it’s easier to spread and covers more surfaces at once, which is fantastic, but you might find it a bit harder to mix and pour. That’s why a warm water soak(for 10 minutes) is required. It’ll make it easier to mix and also lessen the bubble count.

You get two bottles – a resin and a hardener(16 oz. each); If you want more, check the 1-gallon option. Mix both in a 1:1 ratio for around 3 minutes, and it’s ready to use. It has a forgiving 30-40 minutes of work time, so you can be more creative and add some stuff.

I tried mica, glitter, glow pigments, and a plastic embellishment, which worked like a charm. It has a very low odor, making it easy to work with. Once poured, you might see microbubbles, just use a heat gun or torch, and they will dissipate.

You can also leave it still for a couple of minutes, and most of the bubbles(not all) will pop(it’s self-degassing). It cures hard within 24 hours(can de-mold), but it’ll fully cure in 72 hours, so wait until that to sand, polish, or even use it.

Pros

  • No odor, minimal bubbles, and cures hard in 24 hours
  • It works well with glitter, dyes, glow pigments, and other embellishments
  • The thick viscosity makes it easier to spread and cover more
  • Has a forgiving 30-40 minutes of working time
  • Self-degassing and is resistant to sun yellowing

Cons

  • It takes 72 hours to cure fully

How To Make Resin Dice- A Step By Step Guide –

You can follow the guide below or check another article about how to make resin dice here.

1. Different Types Of Mold For Resin Dice –

The best resin for dice and step by step process of making resin dice

There are different types of molds available to make your resin dice. Let’s take a look at them.

1. D4: Tetrahedron dice: This kind of dice has four sides and looks like a pyramid. The numbers from 1 to 4 are featured on the face, and each face has three numbers.

These numbers are basically arranged on triangular points. Also, the number on the top of the triangle will be the same on all faces.

2. D6: Cube dice: It is the most common type of dice which is used in almost all board games. Having the shape of a cube, it contains a number from one to six, and each number is assigned to a face.

3. D8: Octahedron dice: This dice is eight-sided, and each side is in the shape of a triangle. So, the entire dice looks like two pyramids joined at the base. Mostly, this type of dice is used when playing dungeons and dragons.

4. D10: Pentagonal trapezohedron dice: This kind of dice usually works with D00 or percentile dice. It has ten sides and looks like a kite. It is numbered from 0 to 9, where the opposite sides together sum up to nine.

5. D00: Percentile dice: It is the other half of 10-sided dice. This kind of dice is called percentile dice, resulting in a percentage of 100. It has ten sides where each side has values from 00 to 90 going up in tens.

6. D12: Dodecahedron dice: This dice features 12 sides, and each side or face is in a pentagon shape. If you add the value of the opposite sides, you will get 13. This kind of dice is also used in Dungeons and dragons.

7. D20: Icosahedron dice: It is the most known and recognized kind of dice in Dungeons and Dragons, with 20 sides forming an equilateral triangle. If you sum, the two sides which are opposite together should equal 21.

2. What You Should Know About Resin Dice –

Though using epoxy resin is a great way to make arts, crafts, and jewelry. But before you begin, there are specific things which you should consider.

1. Ventilated room – You must select a well-ventilated work area or room. Perhaps you can open the window or use a fan.

2. Wear gloves – Though resins are not radioactive or toxins, you should wear gloves and protect your hands. The reason being they are still chemicals. It is best to wear Nitrile gloves as they don’t react with your skin.

3. Wear a plastic apron or old clothes – When working with resin, drips and spills can happen. This can ruin your new clothes as removing resins from the apron is quite difficult.

4. Safety goggles – Sometimes, the resin can splash into your eye, which can be problematic. So, it is best if you wear protective eyewear.

5. Mask – Resin can sometimes produce a strong odor, making it difficult for you to work. In this kind of situation, it would be best to wear a mask.

3. Materials –

Which is the best epoxy resin for Dice and how to make dice with it

1. The first thing you will require is a mold- it depends upon you to choose a ready-made mold or craft your own mold.

2. Two cups for mixing, which can be wooden or plastic as per your choice, and a utensil for mixing is probably a wooden spoon or spatula

3. Mold release agent and Toothpick to open the mold and allow the resin to effortlessly slide into it and remove any air bubbles after the resin is poured.

4. You can also use mica powders or alcohol inks to add color to your dice or for a glittery appearance.

4. Preparation –

Before you go ahead and prepare your own resin dice, some preparations need to be made beforehand. First, find a clean and clear workspace as the resin is a bit fussy to work with.

Second, ensure that the chosen molds are properly dry and clean. Third, gather all necessary materials or tools within your reach and ready to use.

5. Mix And Pour The Resin –

The first step is to measure and blend the resin to make a dice. You must follow the instructions given by the manufacturer on the package carefully before taking any steps ahead.

1. Examine the recommended blending ratio of the hardener and resin and measure the amount by volume with the help of two different containers.

2. Stream down the two different amounts into a new measuring cup, pouring the liquids as nicely as possible.

3. Use a wooden or plastic stick to blend the two fluids together. Mix according to the duration mentioned by the product manufacturer. However, if no information is given, mix nicely for 4 to 5 minutes.

4. Next, if you want to give your resin color, it is a perfect time to add a little touch of alcohol inks or mica powder. Avoid too much of them as they can hamper the already mixed resin solution.

5. With the help of a toothpick, modify the opening size in the dice mold. You can then flow the mixture into the mold using a toothpick to get desired results.

Remember to pour the resin solution so that no air gets trapped anywhere, which can cause bubbles.

6. Add Glitter Or Embedded Items –

How To Make Resin Dice- A Step By Step Guide and what's the best epoxy resin for diceBefore you actually pour down your resin, decide whether you want clear dice or want to add something to give it a gorgeous look. You can add colors and other creative things to your dice.

Plus, use powdered mica or an alcohol dye if you want to give your dice a vibrant, rich color. Mica powders are usually considered essential as plain, metallic, or glitter colors.

You only need to add a small amount as they are highly concentrated to work in little quantities, making them suitable for coloring resin.

Further, remember, if you use them in a significant amount, the result will be very hazy and shimmery. You can add glitter or a few mall confetti for plain dice to the resin as per your choice or design.

7. Curing –

It is essential to let your resin cure for at least 24 hours before handling the resin. Additionally, before demolding, ensure if it is hard, dry, and smooth to touch, but if it is not, it is still sticky and wet, leave it for a few hours more.

Some resins can take more time to cure than others, so accept a stand-by period between 24 to 72 hours. Your resin can also fail to heal properly because of improper measurements or blending.

However, if your resin is still wet even after leaving for a substantial amount of time, then keep the mold inside the freezer for the whole night.

If your resin becomes hard after this, you can pop it out of the mold, but if it is not, then throw the mold as it has reached the stage where you can cure it no more.

8. Demolding –

Which is the best UV resin for making dice and how to make a resin dice

The next step is demolding, where you take dice out of the mold after your resin is properly cured. Here, you need to be extremely careful because if the mold tears, it will be unusable.

Second, while demolding, you will see some extra material near the edges or sides of the mold; this is called spruce. It is significant as it can make up for shrinkages, if any, that usually occur during the process of curing.

9. Finishing Touch –

The last step is all about providing the finishing touches:

1. First, remove the spruce because they are only helpful during the process of curing. Use a sharp object to remove them as they can make it difficult to roll the dice.

2. After the spruce is removed, you will see an uneven area. You can smooth this area simply by using fine-grit sandpaper.

3. To polish and smooth the remaining dice, you can start with 150-grit sandpaper. However, be careful not to hamper the resin during polishing while using the paper.

4. Next, continue using 180-grit followed by 200-grit sandpaper until you are actually satisfied with your dice’s smoothness. Also, use water in between sandpaper to reduce the dust.

5. In the end, you need to polish your dice with the help of resin polish. This will give it a glossy exterior. Using acrylic paint to add details to the dice, such as numbers or borders, is good.
