Things To Consider –

1. Safety –

It is important to remember that safety comes first when using epoxy resin. Whether you are using it for making jewelry or for any other purpose, be careful! Epoxy resin heats up once you make the mixture.

The chemical reaction between the resin and the hardening agent produces heat. So should you use epoxy resin for making jewelry? Well, the answer is here.

You should always wear gloves while making anything with epoxy resin. Gloves will also protect you from any other chemical or allergic reactions that can happen due to the products.

2. Quantity –

While buying epoxy resin, make sure you buy it only as much as you need it. If you buy more products than needed, your money and the product will go to waste.

The quantity of the product will be written on the container. Check it thoroughly before buying it.

3. Quality –

One of the most important things to consider before buying epoxy resin is the quality of the product. You should buy it from a well-known brand. If the brand reviews are reasonable, you can surely buy it.

Another important thing is the expiry date of the product. Make sure that the product is new. If it is old or expired, you will not be able to use it. Now, let’s move on to the reviews.

4. Sig Wong Epoxy Resin Clear Casting Resin for Jewelry –

If you want a value-for-money epoxy, this is for you. With two bottles, you get four graduated cups, four drippers, four wooden sticks, two pairs of gloves, and detailed instructions, so everything needed is already included except the colors.

Before you get your hands on the epoxy, read the instructions, it’s vital. It’s relatively thin, so it settles well in jewelry molds. You need to mix both bottles in a 1:1 ratio by volume. It’s easy to make bubbles in, so mix and pour it slowly, or you’ll end up with many unwanted bubbles.

If you get some, use a heat gun to pop them up. Once mixed, you have around 40 minutes of work time to make the jewelry. I made a couple of pendants and mixed mica powder to get some color, which turned out great.

The colors mixed well, and it cured hard within 24 hours. I love that it has no odor. It has UV inhibitors that resist yellowing from the sun but don’t keep it out permanently, or it’ll speed up the yellowing process.

Some users say it has a leaky cap, but I think it’s up to you; if you don’t pour it neatly, any resin bottle will dribble, so mix well, and it’ll come out clear and beautiful. However, you can keep some acetone ready to clean it in case of leaks.

Pros

  • Perfect value for money Epoxy for Jewelry
  • It cures crystal clear and hard.
  • This epoxy cures within 24 hours
  • It mixes well with mica powder and other pigments.

Cons

  • Some users say it has a leaky cap

3. DR CRAFTY Clear Epoxy Resin Kit Art Resin For Jewelry –

Unlike other epoxies, this one is specially made for jewelry(and artwork). It lays down very well, mixes thoroughly with ease, and takes mica, glitter, and other embellishments well. The thin viscosity makes it reach tiny spaces in complex molds.

I have made a few earrings, which all cured clear and released easily from molds. Along with the two bottles(8oz each), you get two measuring cups, five wooden sticks, and a plastic spreader for an even spread.

Of course, you don’t need a spreader right now, but you may find it helpful later on for some other project. Although it’s easy to use, I recommend reading the manual beforehand to ensure you get the best results.

You must mix both bottles in a 1:1 ratio, after which you have around 45 minutes of work time. Once mixed, you’ll have bubbles everywhere; let it sit for 3 minutes, and most of them will float up and pop while the rest will pop as you pour it slowly.

One tip I have is to mix it slowly; it’ll produce way fewer bubbles. I like that it doesn’t have an awful smell like resins usually have, which helped me do my craft with ease. People’s biggest complaint is that it doesn’t cure hard whatsoever and remains soft.

Well, it’s not the product’s fault, as that’s how this epoxy is supposed to cure – soft and flexible. You can get a harder cure if you use alcohol inks to color, but for a harder cure, go with Art ’N Glow epoxy(#2 here).

Pros

  • It’s specially made for jewelry and cures clear.
  • It mixed well with mica, glitter, alcohol inks, etc.
  • You get a couple of valuable bonuses included
  • It literally pops the bubbles themselves, so there are fewer bubbles.

Cons

  • Doesn’t cure rock hard

2. Art ‘N Glow Clear Casting and Coating Epoxy Resin For Jewelry –

Another epoxy I strongly recommend for jewelry. It’s straightforward, easy to use, self-leveling, has zero BPA/VOC, no bubbles, and unlike Puduo, it cures hard as a rock. So, if you need an epoxy that cures super hard, this is your go-to.

You can get their 1 Gallon Kit for more quantity. It comes with two bottles(8 oz. each) that require a 1:1 mix and a handy instruction sheet you must read before use. This epoxy has thin viscosity, which flows and settles nicely into the small details on my jewelry molds.

It cures crystal clear, but you can add glow pigments, mica, dyes, and even glitter to add some tint/ glow. It mixes properly, adds vibrancy, and holds the color well. It’s self-degassing, so all the bubbles surface and pop, given time.

I love that it gets little to no bubbles that quickly vanish with a heat gun and that it’s odorless. It has UV inhibitors that resist yellowing from the sun. Once mixed, it gives you 30-40 minutes of work time and cures hard within 24 hours.

But it’s not ready yet; you must wait another 48 hours(a total of 72), so it cures fully.

Pros

  • Clear, easy to use, self-leveling, and cures hard as a rock
  • It has UV inhibitors and zero BPA and VOC.
  • You can mix it with mica, glow pigment, glitter, etc.
  • Little to no bubbles automatically pop up.
  • It cures within 24 hours, which is faster than most epoxies.

Cons

  • Need 72 hours to fully cure

1. Puduo Epoxy Resin Crystal Clear Kit for Jewelry –

When it comes to jewelry, hands down, this is the best epoxy. I’m super impressed by the quality itself, but the bonus made it my favorite. Not only do you get two 8oz. bottles, but also 4 graduated cups, three sticks, and a pair of rubber gloves.

So, you can say it’s the perfect value-for-money epoxy. It’s very easy to use; even beginners can quickly get their hands on it. It dries nice and clear, has no microbubbles, barely smells, and cures quickly. You can actually remove it from the mold after just 8 hours.

It takes another 16 hours to cure fully, but it’s perfect if you want to produce a large batch with fewer molds. Now, I noticed that it doesn’t cure rock-hard but is soft, so if you want a super hard rock-like cure, this isn’t the best option.

Once you mix the resin and hardener in a 1:1 ratio, you have 40 minutes of work time, which is enough for your craft. Since it’s self-leveling, it settles nicely in the molds with barely any bubbles. It dries clear, but you can add mica or glow pigments to add some color and glow.

It mixed beautifully with my shiny powdered pigment, dried perfectly, and came out perfect. It has added UV inhibitors that prevent yellowing from UV exposure but don’t keep it out permanently. I love it, and I assure you’ll too. If you think the quality is less, check their 1 Gallon kit.

Pros

  • You get a couple of great bonuses, making it value-for-money
  • It’s very easy to use, even for a beginner
  • You can take it out of mold after just 9 hours
  • It mixes great with most pigments
  • Added UV inhibitors prevent yellowing from the sun
  • It dries clear with no microbubbles and barely has any smell

Cons

  • It doesn’t cure rock hard

Types Of Resins –

Procedure For Making Jewelry From Epoxy Resins

Classification Of Resins Resins Are Classified In Three Ways:

1. Taxonomical classification-  according to its botanical origin.

2. Classification according to their main chemical ingredient.

3. Resins may be classified according to whether they are the main part of the mixture or a substitute.

Here Are The Most Popular Types Of Resins:

1. Acrylic Resins

They are made from acrylic acids. They have high tensile strength. They are UV resistant. They are used to make glues, coatings, signs, tiles, and decorative items.

2. Alkyl Resins

These are made using polyhydric alcohols and polybasic acids. They have high resistance to heat and are good conductors of electricity. Hence, they are used for insulation, producing electronic devices, and paints.

3. Polycarbonate Resins

These are very refractive. They are used to make helmets, photography films, lenses, etc.

4. Silicone Resins

These have good thermal stability and are water-proof. Hence they are used to make rubber, laminations, paints, coatings, and other water-resistant items.

Types Of Resins Depending Upon Their Preparation –

Which epoxy resin should you buy for making jewelry like pendants, bracelets, earrings and more

Two main classes of resin substances are below. This classification is done according to the method by which the resins are prepared.

1. Natural Resins

these occur as excretions from plants, occurring either naturally or as a result of pathogenic conditions such as artificial punctures due to mastic or deep cuts in the wood of the plant or by hammering and scorching, e.g., Balsam of Peru.

2. Prepared Resins

The product with resins is crushed and mixed with alcohol. This mixture is heated till it dissipates. This extract containing alcohol gets evaporated, or water is added to it.

After this reaction, the precipitate yields pure resin. This resin is carefully taken, washed, and kept for drying. However, ether or acetone is used for preparing oleoresins as they have a lower boiling point.

The oil in this gets evaporated quickly. This is done using the distillation method. When extracting resin with gum, you can mix it with alcohol. The alcohol evaporates and leaves resin as a residue.

Why Epoxy Resins Are Best –
